More Research - Barbara Kruger and Keith Carter

Barbara Kruger is an American conceptual artist. Much of her work consists of black-and-white photographs overlaid with declarative captions—in white-on-red. The phrases in her works often include pronouns such as "you", "your", "I", "we", and "they".  I like the way her work is so OUT there, and expressive to the idea and it got me thinking about how I could use captions in my photography and the view point of it being family violence as Mrs said could work.

Keith Carter explores relationships that are timeless, enigmatic, and mythological. Drawing from the animal world, popular culture and religion. Carter presents photographs that attempt to reflect hidden meanings in the real world. Carter makes photographs addressing the relationship we have to our ideas of place, time, memory, desire, and regret. He examines at times, the history of photography as well as our own shared histories. I really like how he using black and white photography and how he blurs the image. This is the technique I am hoping to use.

So, somehow I want to out together these two artists and make unique and interesting of my own and by the looks of things I am going to use the idea of family violence. NEXT STEP: getting models!

My ideas about what I may do this year

I'm so happy to get the opportunity to do photography again for 2014 and I really do hope that this year  turns out good.  Last year for photography my concept was childhood memories and was using still life. This year I want to do something COMPLETELY different! so here are my ideas...

  1. Family violence using either models or my dolls I have at home.
  2. Urban Environment, going out to the city taking photo's of Christchurch
  3. Vintage theme, using dream catchers and going out to the beach.

I was thinking of the theme Family Violence because I remember watching on the news about how its so common in New Zealand and if I were to use this I would try to get models and use my make-up skills to create something very interesting.

Urban Environment came up because when I was doing my research I found this really good artist model called Joel Meyerowits. I really like his work because it reminds me of Christchurch's rebuild.

I'm in love with anything vintage and that was kinda what I did last year with my grandads camera. But was thinking I could go to the beach and think of a way to change it to a vintage kinda effect. I could always use models for this too.

Research - Human Presence Implied

Human Presence Implied – Focusing on Richard Long

Richard Long is a Photographer, Sculptor, and painter who has been said to be one of Britain most famous sculptors.

Human Presence Implied in this case means only using things from a natural setting and applying human presence. For example seeing someones footsteps on the sand but not showing anyone in it and only showing what they applied. Long works with many materials such as Stone, driftwood and mud and turns them into patterns on the ground. His work relates back to ancient times by using mostly circles, lines, crosses and spirals which are immediately noticed in his work. I really like his work because its done so well that it really doesn't look like it was done by someone.

Quote: "I think circles have belonged in some way or other to all people at all times. They are universal and timeless, like the image of a human hand. For me, that is part of their emotional power, although there is nothing symbolic or mystical in my work." —Richard Long source wikipeida

Research - Urban Environment

Urban environment... Focusing on Joel Meyerowitz

Urban area photography is the most well recognized genre of photography and has been around forever. Whether it’s taking a photo of New York City at night, or overlooking Brooklyn Bridge urban area photography is very popular. Black and white street photographer seems to be the popular theme for taking photos of an urban environment.

The photographer that I’m focusing on for urban environment is Joel Meyerowitz. He has been a leading figure in street photography for a very long time now, and he has written many books showing his photography including a book that showed pictures of 9/11 after the attack. He started photography in the 1970 and since been going from black and white to colour.

Research - Cinematography

Cinematography… using Conrad L Hall as an example

Cinematography is an art form of film-making that started in the early 19th century and was known as the golden age of movies. Cinematography was the start of the filming era of black and white motion pictures and with no words, only music. They also used different types of cameras and different lenses to change effects.  A cinematographer does the same job any photographer would do such as uses different camera angles, lighting, shadows, and change objects around etc...

Conrad L Hall is known to be one of Hollywood’s best cinematographers of all time and has won many Oscars. He started his career in the mid 1960’s and has worked in many great films such as American beauty, Declaration of Independence, Hell in the pacific and Road to Perdition.

This is a scene from American beauty. Hall used shadows to give more of an effect of going from night till day as the light comes through the window.

This is a scene from American Beauty. Hall also used the rule of thirds. I like how he used the candles around the girl in the middle. It’s as if she is the angel and the person the man and woman look up to because the light she on her.

This is a scene from Road to Perdition. Hall used the rule of thirds in this shot. The lighting coming down on the people made me feel hope.
